<p>Using crystals brought back from the Moon by Apollo astronauts in 1972, scientists were able to pinpoint the time of the Moon’s formation. These lunar crystals, which formed after an ocean of magma on the Moon's surface cooled down, were determined via radiometric dating to be at least 4.46 billion years old. That means that the Moon is 40 million years older than scientists previously thought.</p>
